  • Present: Roger B. Taney, John T. Towers, Stephen A. Douglas, James M. Mason, James A. Pearce, Alexander Dallas Bache, Joseph G. Totten, John M. Berried, Gideon Hawley, and Richard Rush. The members not present were William H. English, David Stuart, and James Meacham.
  • The resolutions presented by James A. Pearce on January 13, 1855 were laid on the table and approved by a vote of 8 yeas to 2 nays. He proposed that the Board of Regents approve the removal of the Assistant Secretary in charge of the Library, Charles C. Jewett by Secretary Joseph Henry. He also recommended that the approval of the Board of Regents was not necessary for Jewett's removal.
  • On the motion of Mr. Rush, John T. Towers was elected to fill the vacancy in the Building Committee. The report of the Executive Committee making estimate of appropriations for the year 1855 was taken up and adopted. A motion by Joseph G. Totten that the Building Committee should be able to pay any excess expenses required for the completion of the Smithsonian Building out of the Institutions funds was adopted. The report of the Building Committee was read and adopted. A memorial and printed pamphlet from John Lord, of Portland, Maine, was read and ordered to lie on the table. The board adjourned to meet on Saturday, January 27, at 10:00 am.
