PrintThe following sums have been appropriated: $15,000 for urgent and necessary building repairs; $12,000 for the expenses of the system of international exchanges, including salaries of employees; $12,000 for the expense of heating, lighting, and electrical and telephonic service for the National Museum; $116,000 for preservation of collections; $40,000 for cases, furniture, fixtures, and appliances required for the exhibition and safe-keeping of the collections; and $10,000 for the improvement, care and maintenance of Smithsonian Grounds. A commission, consisting of the Secretary of State, the Librarian of Congress, and the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, has been formed to report to Congress the character and value of the historical and other manuscripts belonging to the Government, and what method and policy should be pursued in regard to editing and publishing them.
