Summary

The article describes the history of the Canal Zone Biological Area on the Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal watershed and discusses the work of some of the scientists working there. The Canal Zone Biological Area is a department of the Smithsonian Institution and is now called the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI).
