Summary

The focus of this journal issue is the Photographic History Collection at the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History. The Guest Editorial sets the stage for an engrossing look at the collection's rich history and resources as various aspects of the wide and varied collection are then presented in essays written by the Guest Editor and fourteen other individuals having expertise in certain facets of the collection. Events leading to the 1896 founding of the collection, managed by Thomas W. Smillie, are discussed, early photographic techniques and equipment for both still and moving pictures are explored, and selected collection acquisitions are reviewed.
