Summary

  • This volume was compiled in honor of John Julius Wurdack, who retired in 1991 as Curator, Department of Botany in the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. Preliminary information begins with the Table of Contents, Index of Photographs and Drawings, and an Introduction containing a brief biography of Wurdack, who was born in 1921 and left the New York Botanical Garden as Associate Curator in 1960 to take a position in the Division of Phanerogams in the U. S. National Museum of the Smithsonian Institution.
  • The volume is then divided into three sections which demonstrate and praise the vast work accomplished by Wurdack in the fields of botany and taxonomy during his long career. The first, John Wurdack's Publications, consists of three articles, one written in Spanish. The second, Tributes and Reminiscences, is composed of eight English-language essays. The third section, Scientific Papers, consists of thirty-seven articles, four written in Spanish. Each of the articles in all three sections is preceded by an abstract written in both English and Spanish. The book contains twenty drawings and photographs, many of which are from the Wurdack Family's collection.
