Summary

  • This book is a guide to the 750,000 photographs of people and places in Washington, D.C. and its environs which are included in the vast holdings of the Prints and Photographs Division at the Library of Congress, which acquired the photographs through copyright deposit from 1870 on and through gifts and purchases of important collections. From 1983 through 1985, a foundations grant enabled the division to undertake a project that processed 350,000 previously inaccessible items into its photographic collection of the capital city and vicinity. Authored by the project's director, the guide was produced to stimulate new research interest in subjects related to Washington, D.C., and is designed for use in planning research strategies prior to visiting the Library's Prints and Photographs Division.
  • The guide is arranged for easy reference, with an interesting introduction and preliminary information on the project, a section on interpreting the descriptive entries explaining the contents of the collections, an alphabetical listing of popular collections and subjects, browsing files, and subject index. The division's holdings include some photographs relating to the Smithsonian, as a number of references to various aspects of the Smithsonian Institution and the Castle Building appear in the index.
