Summary

Work is a short introduction to an issue devoted to articles about the different bureaus and divisions of the Smithsonian, and a brief article on the anniversary of the first one hundred years of the Institution written by the current Smithsonian Secretary, Alexander Wetmore. Explains the American landscape into which the SI was born, gives the occupations of the first five Secretaries and a list of the related bureaus. Discusses the scientific aspect of the Institution, as well as the "national art treasures" contained in the National Gallery of Art, National Collection of Fine Arts and Freer Gallery of Art.
