Summary

Exercises at the unveiling of the Joseph Henry memorial statue, 19 April 1883, in front of the Smithsonian Castle on the Mall. United States Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite delivered the address, which covered the history of the Henry statue, as well as some history of the Smithsonian. Lightly covers Henry's move to the Smithsonian as Secretary. The oration was delivered by Noah Porter, LL.D., President of Yale College. A biographical eulogy of Joseph Henry, the address focused on the history of the Henry statue and Henry's aims for science and research and for the Smithsonian. Covers Henry's early career, including Albany and lauds the Smithsonian, National Museum, National Library and collection of art.
