Summary

The official legislation enacting the Smithsonian Institution as an establishment. Enacts the deposit of the Smithson fund into the U. S. Treasury; creation of the Board of Regents; a building to be built to house a museum, chemical laboratory, library, art gallery, and lecture rooms; creation of the post of Secretary to direct the Institution; and creation of the Institution as an official copyright depository.
