Summary

  • Work explains integral part that publications have played in the history of the Smithsonian and for the mandate for the "increase and diffusion of knowledge" from the time of Joseph Henry. Discusses Henry's institution of the Contributions to Knowledge. Provides background on the Smithsonian Annual Reports and the scientific articles in the appendices. Discusses the more technical publications like the Contributions to Knowledge and the Smithsonian Miscellaneous Collections, and mentions several of the well-known papers in both series. Explains the purposes of the Proceedings of the United States National Museum (publication of shorter papers on the work of the staff) and the Bulletin of the United States National Museum (larger monographic works in the fields of anthropology, biology, geology and engineering.
  • Includes references to other publications in the Bulletin series, such as the Contributions of the National Herbarium.
