Summary

This article, celebrating the life of one of ten pioneers of American science included in the publication, concerns Spencer F. Baird, a man of many talents who was Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. The author begins with very scant biographical information on Baird, but then lists the various science disciplines in which Baird was involved and specifies positions held. The claim is made that of all the titles held, Director of the Commission of Fish and Fisheries was truly Baird's own, for the Commission was created by and for him. Brief details surrounding Baird's work in developing and leading the work of the Bureau of Fisheries precede the author's thought that Baird's most enduring fame may result from his enthusiasm and the encouragement he gave to others.
