Summary

A preface to the works declares that the volumes "give the legislative history of the Smithsonian Institution... prefixed to this will be found a selection of the documents which passed between the United States and the attorneys in England antecedent to the actual reception of the bequest of James Smithson." Of particular interest are the numerous Congressional documents included in the volumes. These cover every aspect of the history of the Smithsonian Institution. Also includes lists of Members of the Establishment and Board of Regents by occupation.

Volume 42 covers the years 1835-1887, the twenty-fourth Congress to the forty-sixth Congress. Volume 43 covers the years 1887-1899, from the fiftieth Congress to the fifty-fifth Congress. Each volume contains a table of contents that includes itself and the companion volume.
