Summary

Charles de la Batut, a grandson of Madame de la Batut by her second marriage, writes to Secretary Langley to explain and defend his relationship to James Smithson, including with his letter a genealogic tree as proof. He also expresses disdain for Langley's suggestion that the de la Batut family take charge of Smithson's remains, due to the expense that would be involved.
