PrintSmithsonian Secretary Joseph Henry is elected President of the newly-established American Association for the Advancement of Science at its first annual meeting in Philadelphia. His term would officially begin at the second annual meeting, to be held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, starting on August 14, 1849.
