Summary

Reprinted from the 1901 Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution, in order to balance recent criticisms of the Institution in Popular Science. Describes the creation of the Institution, the directions established by the first Secretary, Joseph Henry, the development of the United States National Museum by Spencer Fullerton Baird, the work of the International Exchange Service, and the establishment of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and National Zoological Park by Samuel P. Langley. The articles closes with future plans for a new National Museum building and a National Gallery of Art.
