Summary

Written by the Curator of the Division of Medical Sciences, the paper summarizes the history of the Division of Materia Medica, 1881-1898; Division of Medicine, 1898-1939; Division of Medicine and Public Health, 1939-1957; and Division of Medical Science, 1957 to the present, and presents plans for the division in the new History and Technology Building (now American History Building). Describes the division's origin in the drug exhibit at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876, its acquisitions, exhibits and current status as the largest collection in the Western Hemisphere of historical objects relating to the healing arts. Includes photographs of exhibits, staff and artifacts.
