Summary

To facilitate preparations for the Centennial Exhibition, Baird reports the organization of several departments within the National Museum: ethnology, under Dr. Charles Rau, assisted by Dr. Edward Foreman and Mr. Frank H. Cushing; minerals, under Prof. William P. Blake, assisted by Mr. Thomas Donaldson; and animals and fisheries, under Mr. G. Brown Goode, assisted by Mr. T. H. Bean and Mr. H. C. Chester.

  • For the first time, the listing of officers and assistants at the beginning of the Annual Report includes the names of those in charge of divisions of the National Museum. These are not the same individuals heading the departments established by Baird to prepare for the Centennial Exhibition.
