A biography of Charles Coffin Jewett, Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian in charge of the library. Jewett ran afoul of the first Smithsonian Secretary, Joseph Henry, who fired him and ended Jewett's ambitious plans for a national library at the Smithsonian.
