Summary

This work, written on the centennary of Samuel P. Langley's birth, recalls his devotion to his astronomical work, including his work at the Western University of Pennsylvania and his accomplishments at the Smithsonian. Langley served as Secretary of the Smithsonian from 1887 to 1906. Some anecdotes are related; however, the majority of the memoir is devoted to descriptions of "pioneer investigations" in field of aeronautics, written in Langley's own words.
