Summary

An expedition under the direction of chief taxidermist William Temple Hornaday goes to Montana to collect specimens for exhibition and exchange. Spurred by accounts of the decimation of the great herds of bison, the Smithsonian sought to secure a complete series of fresh skins for mounting "before it should become too late." Hornaday presents his experiences in his paper entitled, "The Extermination of the American Bison," which is published in the Annual Report of the United States National Museum for 1887.
