Summary

Addresses the Quadrangle project and the addition of two museums: the National Museum of African Art and the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery which houses Oriental art, as well as the Enid A. Haupt Garden. Includes discussion of Smithsonian Secretary S. Dillon Ripley's previous accomplishments and his ideas for the addition, the funding for the project, and the architectural design of the new building complex by Jean-Paul Carlhian. Also details the history of the acquisition of the Museum of African Art and describes the overcrowding of the Freer Gallery of Art and the need for new facilities.
