Introduction gives the history of the national collection, which began before the Smithsonian Institution was established. Describes the collection's beginnings with John Varden, Andrew Mellon's contributions and the creation of the National Gallery of Art, and individual donations to the National Collection. The rest of the book presents reproductions of works from the collection with commentaries on the works and the artists.
