Summary

Chapter One addresses the importance of private philanthropy to the museum and describes the major donations such as the Andrew Mellon Collection, the Kress Collection, the Widener Collection, the Dale Collection, and the Rosenwald Collection. Other chapters discuss educational services, research and publication, scientific investigation, and music at the National Gallery. A series of tables in the back of the book present information such as donors and benefactors, a list of books published by the National Gallery of Art and its staff members, and a record of loan exhibitions held at the National Gallery. Also includes color illustrations of works from the gallery's collection.
