Summary

At 8:45 a.m., Leonard E. Manning, a former employee of the National Air and Space Museum shops, armed with an automatic pistol, attempts to steal over $2,500 in cash and checks from the National Museum of Natural History shop. The shop manager pressed the security alarm, the Museum security force secured the doors, and Manning was apprehended with a brown bag and pockets stuffed with money. Manning had been a clerk with Smithsonian Museum Shops for one year, but had his employment terminated in August 1981.
