Summary

The Smithsonian Science Information Service ceases operations after 33 years. Although it was founded in 1949 by several federal organizations concerned with the research in medical sciences it eventually branched into nearly every area of science and technology. It became associated with the SI in 1954, and in 1971 it became a non-profit corporation governed by a SI-appointed Board of Directors. In June 1982 the official certificate of dissolution is granted.
