Porter Kier resigns as director of the National Museum of Natural History, a position he held since January 1973. He is presented the Smithsonian Institution's Henry Medal, and is the ninth to receive the medal since it was first officially presented in 1967. He functions as senior scientist at the Museum until June 1985.
