Summary

The first year of a pilot program in American Studies involving Smith College and the Smithsonian Institution begins. The program grew out of a proposal made by Smith's director of American Studies, Donal Robinson and was administered by Edith Whiteman. Seven interns participated in the program: Karyn Hausmann, Traci Williams, Ellen Harrington, Monica Conygham, Nancy Guyton, Candace Jones and Jane Henderson. Three worked at the National Museum of American History, two at the National Portrait Gallery, one at Archives of American Art and the last with the Joseph Henry Papers Project.
