Notes

  • The Office of the Registrar initiates a new Congressionally mandated Smithsonian collection inventory program using an automated data processing system. This is the first thorough tabulation of the Institution's collections since the Smithsonian was founded in 1846. Under the program, the responsibility for coordinating inventories on an Institution-wide basis is assigned to the Smithsonian Registrar.
  • Image comes from Accession 11-009 and the photograph was printed in the Smithsonian Torch, July 1983, in an article on the collections inventory, which can be found in Record Unit 371, Box 5, July 1983.
