PrintThe Council of American Overseas Research Centers [CAORC] is established and holds its first annual meeting at the Smithsonian on October 22,1984, in the Regents' Room, Smithsonian Institution Building. A consortium of overseas research centers, such as the American Academy in Rome and American Research Center in Egypt, first organized informally in 1978, held a planning meeting at the Smithsonian in 1981, and organized as a formal group in 1984, with space provided by the Smithsonian. Smithsonian Secretary Robert McC. Adams was a founder of the group. CAORC's goals include improving communication between the widely scattered centers, as well as coordinated publicity and fund raising. Starting in 1990, their federal budget support was received through the Smithsonian's federal appropriation. Gretchen Gayle Ellsworth and Francine Berkowitz serve as Smithsonian liaisons.
