Summary

Stephanie Stebich becomes the new Director of the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She succeeds Betsy Broun, who retired from the Smithsonian in 2016. Stebich's first day at the museum is April 3, 2017. Stebich was the Executive Director of the Tacoma Art Museum in Tacoma, Washington, a position she held from 2005 to 2017. Under her leadership, the museum underwent a major renovation that doubled its exhibition space. She oversaw the development and implementation of the museum's strategic plan, as well as a 10-year collecting strategy. During her tenure, the museum acquired 2,000 works, including one of the finest Japanese woodblock print collections on the West Coast, the largest collection of studio art jewelry by Northwest artists, and the Haub Family Collection of Western American Art, one of the nation's premier Western American art collections. The museum is also home to the largest collection of works in glass by Tacoma native Dale Chihuly on view in a public museum.
