Summary

On Friday, 6 January 2017, Allen Kane, the Director of the National Postal Museum, retires after 14 years of service to the Smithsonian. During his tenure, Kane energized the planning, development, and building of the remarkable Gross Gallery, arranged for outstanding philatelic acquisitions, oversaw many fine exhibitions and public programs, and made the museum a world-renowned research and educational resource. Richard Kurin, Acting Provost noted that the Institution was currently searching for Kane's replacement, and hoped to announce a new director early in the year. The search committee members are Megan Brennan, Postmaster General of the United States; Donald Sundman and Charles Shreve of the Council of Philatelists; John Nolan, Co-Chair of the Postal Museum's Advisory Committee; Kim Sajet, Director, National Portrait Gallery; Cheryl Ganz, Curator Emerita, Postal Museum; and Polone Bazile, Associate Director for Finance and Administration, Postal Museum. To ensure that the museum continues to have strong leadership between Kane's departure and the appointment of a new director, Marshall Emery, the museum's Director of Public Relations and Internet Affairs, will serve as Acting Director. Emery has been with the museum for 10 years. Prior to joining the Smithsonian, he spent 25 years with the U.S. Postal Service holding various executive-level positions.
