Summary

The first Smithsonian Secretary, Joseph Henry, personally helped James H. Logan, one of the first three deaf students at Gallaudet College, obtain a patent for an improvement of a microscope. Logan, as a recent graduate of the "National Deaf Mute College" or Gallaudet, led the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in its early years.
