Summary

The Freer Gallery of Art commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the museum. As part of the celebrations, Professor Tanaka Ichimatsu, expert in Japanese painting and former employee of the Tokyo Museum, is presented with the Charles Lang Freer Medal. An exhibition of more than 100 Japanese ukiyo-e ("floating world") paintings from the Freer collection opens on May 2. On May 3 and 4, the Freer Gallery hosts a symposium on ukiyo-e art, with scholars from many countries presenting papers on the subject.
