Summary

  • Present: James A. Pearce, Stephen A. Douglas, William H. English, Benjamin Stanton, George E. Badger, and Alexander Dallas Bache. Also Present: Joseph Henry. Members not present were John C. Breckinridge, Roger B. Taney, James G. Berret, James M. Mason, Lucius J. Gartrell, Joseph G. Totten, Cornelius C. Felton, and Gideon Hawley.
  • Mr. Pearce was called to the Chair. Mr. Pearce presented the report of the Executive Committee, which was accepted and estimates for the year 1860, which were adopted. On the motion of Mr. Douglas, it was resolved that the Executive Committee invest the $5000 of the extra fund. The Secretary laid before the Board the eleventh volumn of Smithsonian Comributions to Knowledge. The Secretary brought before the Board the subject of assistants' pay, which was referred to the Secretary and the Executive Committee. Prof. Bache made remarks and offered two resolutions in memory of Gustavus Wurdemann. The Secretary read a notce on the late Prof. Cleaveland. On the motion of Mr. Douglas, two resolutions were adopted in Prof. Cleaveland's memory. The Secretary presented a letter from Mr. Boss, chief factor of the Hudson's Bay Company regarding a meteorological register for September-November. The reading of the report of the Secretary was then continued. On the motion of Mr. Badger a resolution thanking those who had helped the Institution in kind was adopted. The Board then adjourned to meet at the call of the Secretary.
