Summary

• Present: John C. Breckinridge, James G. Berret, James A. Pearce, Stephen A. Douglas ,Alexander Dallas Bache, and Cornelius C. Felton. Also Present: Joseph Henry. Members not present were Roger B. Taney, James M. Mason, William H. English, Lucius J. Gartrell, Benjamin Stanton, Joseph G. Totten, Gideon Hawley, and George E. Badger.
• Mr. Breckinridge was called to the chair. The Secretary announced the death of Washington Irving, an honorary member; Prof. Parker Cleaveland, a honorary member; Prof. W. W. Turner, Prof. James P. Espy, and G. Wurdemann. Professor Felton then offered remarks and two resolutions in honor of W. W. Turner and Washington Irving. Professor Bache offered remarks and two resolutions in honor of James P. Espy. The Secretary then introduced the subject of warming the Smithsonian building, stating that it was important to provide better means for this purpose. The subject was referred to the Executive Committee and the Secretary was instructed to procure estimates for the introduction of steam or hot water apparatus. The reading of the report of the Secretary was continued. The Board then adjourned.
