  • Present: John C. Breckinridge, James M. Mason, Stephen A. Douglas, Alexander Dallas Bache, George E. Badger, and Cornelius C. Felton. Also Present: Joseph Henry and William W. Seaton. Members not present were Roger B. Taney, William B. Magruder, James A. Pearce, William H. English, Benjamin Stanton, Joseph G. Totten, Gideon Hawley, and Richard Rush.
  • In the absence of the Chancellor, the Vice-President was called to the chair. The Secretary stated that since the last meeting of the Board William H. English, Benjamin Stanton, and L.J. Gartrell were appointed as regents from the House of Representatives. The treasurer presented a statement of the receipts and expenditures during the year 1857, and also a general statement of funds; which were referred to the Executive Committee.
  • A communication from J.M. Stanley offering the sale of his gallery of Indian portraits. On motion, this communication was referred to a special committee of Messrs. Felton, Douglas, and Badger. The Secretary laid before the Board a present from Miss Contaxaki of Greece consisting of drawings and illustrations of Greece as well as letters regarding the present. On motion this was referred to Prof. Felton to report a resolution of appreciation and a letter of acknowledgement to Miss Contaxaki. A letter was read from Sir George Simpson, expressing the desire of the Hudson Bay Company to help in collecting specimens of natural history. The Board then adjourned to meet on Saturday, 30th instant, at 11 o'clock am.
