- Present: W. B. Magruder, James A. Pearce, Stephen A. Douglas, William H. English, Benjamin Stanton, George E. Badger, and Cornelius C. Felton. Also Present: Joseph Henry. Members not present were Roger B. Taney, James M. Mason, Hiram Warner, Alexander Dallas Bache, Joseph G. Totten, Gideon Hawley, and Richard Rush.
- In the absence of the Chancellor, Mr. Pearce was called to the chair. Mr. English, from the Committee on Finance, presented a report that stocks and bonds had been purchased of the States of Indiana, Virginia, and Tennessee. For further details, the minutes list a report from the Secretary on the purchase of these stocks. On the motion of Mr. Magruder, the report was accepted and adopted. The statement of the treasurer for 1856 was presented and referred to the Executive Committee. Mr. English presented the report of the Building Committee which was accepted. On the motion of Mr. Magruder, the Secretary was authorized to have the cisterns arched over with brick and one of them arranged for an ice-house.
