Smithsonian Institution, Board of Regents, Minutes, 1856

Summary

• Present: James A. Pearce, Stephen A. Douglas, James M. Mason, William H. English, Hiram Warner, and Alexander Dallas Bache. Also Present: Joseph Henry. Members not present were Roger B. Taney, William B. Magruder, Benjamin Stanton, Joseph G. Totten, Cornelius C. Felton, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and George E. Badger.
• The Secretary stated the Mr. Corcoran had informed him that he could not purchase the stocks directed to be bought by the Board at its last meeting at the prices limited by the resolution of June 18, 1856. On the motion of Dr. Magruder, it was resolved that the Secretary, under direction of the Committee on Finance, be instructed to purchase said stocks at the market rate. The Board then adjourned sine die.
