  • Present: Roger B. Taney, William B. Magruder, James A. Pearce, William H. English, Hiram Warner, and Alexander Dallas Bache. Also Present: Joseph Henry and W. W. Corcoran. Members not present were Stephen A. Douglas, James M. Mason, Benjamin Stanton, Joseph G. Totten, Cornelius C. Felton, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and George E. Badger.
  • The Secretary stated that Dr. W. B. Magruder, having been elected Mayor of the city of Washington, is a Regent of the Institution and takes his seat on the Board. Mr. English, from the Finance Committee, made a report stating funds at Corcoran and Riggs should be added to the funds in the Treasury and that application be made to Congress to do so. In the meantime, the report advised to put the funds into the stocks and bonds of sound, interest paying States. A resolution was offered to form a committee to make application to Congress and in the meantime invest in the States. On the motion of Dr. Magruder, the report was accepted and the resolutions adopted. The Chancellor appointed James A. Pearce and Hiram Warner as the committee to make application to Congress. The Board then adjourned to meet at the call of the Secretary.
