Summary

  • Present: Roger B. Taney, John W. Maury, James A. Pearce, James M. Mason, William H. English, David Stuart, James Meacham, Alexander Dallas Bache, and Joseph G. Totten. Also Present: Joseph Henry and William W. Seaton. Members not present were Stephen A. Douglas, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and John M. Berrien.
  • The Chancellor, Roger B. Taney, took the chair. The Secretary informed the Board that a meeting of the Establishment had been called, by the order of the President of the United States, in May last. The proceedings of this meeting were read. Mr. Maury, on the part of the Building Committee, submitted its report; which was read and adopted. The treasurer, W.W. Seaton, presented the details of the expenditures during the year 1853 and a general statement of finances which, on motion, were refered to the Executive Committee.
  • The Secretary called the attention of the Board to the fact that a resolution has been adopted by the House of Representatives appointing a committee of nine to inquire into the expediency of withdrawing the Smithsonian fund from the Treasury of the United States and investing it in some safe stocks. On the motion of Mr. Mason, the consideration of the subject was postponed until the Secretary should be called upon by the committee of the House for information , and his report was presented to the Board. The Secretary presented his report of the operation of the institution for the year 1853; which was in part read. On the motion of Mr. Maury it was resolved that the vacancy on the Building Committee be filled by the chair. Whereupon Mr. William H. English was appointed. The Board then adjourned to meet on Saturday January 28th, at 10 o'clock am.
