Summary

  • Present: Robert M. Charlton, James M. Mason, William F. Colcock, James Meacham, Alexander Dallas Bache, and Joseph G. Totten. Also Present: Joseph Henry, Washington Irving. Members not present were Roger B. Taney, John W. Maury, James A. Pearce, Graham N. Fitch, Rufus Choate, Gideon Hawley, Richard Rush, and John M. Berrien.
  • In the absence of the Chancellor, on the motion of Mr. Rush, Mr. Mason took the chair. The Secretary announced to the Board that Professor A.D. Bache had been re-elected for six years, and that John M. Berrien had been elected for six years as well. The Secretary reported on the expedition of Dr. E.K. Kane, US Navy, and his want of instruments for magnetic observations in the Artic seas and reminded the Board of Lieutenant Gilliss's expedition to whom a timely and highly useful grant had been made by the Board under similar circumstances and which had been reimbursed. Mr. Rush offered a resolution that $500 dollars be appropriated, which was adopted. The Secretary presented the request of the Rev. Mr. Dennison for the use of the lecture room for religious services, which was referred to the Secretary.
  • The reading of the Annual Report was continued, including the reoprt of Professer Baird. Mr. Mason expressed a desire to resign his place on the Executive Committee, which he had accepted with a view to the reappointment of Mr. Bache, and his subsequent reelection to the Executive Committee. The resignation of Mr. Mason was accepted and Mr. Bache re-elected. A letter was presented from Gilbert Cameron requesting he be allowed to finish the centre building, which was referred to the Building Committee. The Board then adjourned to Thursday evening, February 3 at 6 1/2 o'clock.
