  • Biography: John Fahey of Washington, D.C., has served as Chairman of the National Geographic Society since January 2011, and is Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Society's Board of Trustees and Chairman of the National Geographic Education Foundation Board of Governors. Mr. Fahey served as CEO of National Geographic from 1998 to 2013 and President from 1998 to 2010. During his tenure as President and CEO, he led an evolution of the Society, including its entry into cable television with the National Geographic Channels; the international growth of National Geographic magazine; and the extension of National Geographic content into virtually every aspect of digital media.
  • He advanced the Society's efforts to improve geographic literacy and guided the expansion of its mission programs, including the creation of the National Geographic Explorers-in-Residence, Fellows, and Emerging Explorers programs and the Genographic Project. Before joining National Geographic, he was Chairman, President, and CEO of Time Life Inc. He also worked for Home Box Office, where he was instrumental in the startup of CINEMAX.
