Paul E. Desautels (1920-1991), a mineralogist, curator of the Department of Gems and Minerals, at the National Museum of Natural History, holds a mineral specimen in his hands. - Kjell Bloch Sandved of the Office of Exhibits, National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), at the commission of Porter Kier, then Director, NMNH, prepared these photographic materials to document personnel and activities of NMNH in 1975.
- In 1957 Desautels left teaching to take a position as Curator of Gems and Minerals in the Department of Mineral Sciences of the National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution) in Washington, DC, a position he was to hold for the next 25 years. During his tenure as Curator he actively pursued acquisitions. One of his foremost achievements was the acquisition in 1970 of the Carl Bosch collection of 25,000 mineral specimens.
