Notes
- The Office of the Registrar initiates a new Congressionally mandated Smithsonian collection inventory program using an automated data processing system in 1978. This is the first thorough tabulation of the Institution's collections since the Smithsonian was founded in 1846. Under the program, the responsibility for coordinating inventories on an Institution-wide basis is assigned to the Smithsonian Registrar.
- Smithsonian Collection Inventory staff complete the first phase of the Congressionally mandated inventory of all Smithsonian collections in 1983. They have identified c. 100 million objects and specimens since the inventory began in October of 1978. They now have computer records for each accession. Phase two will consist of the "reconciliation phase," matching pre-existing records against the inventory records, and reconciling any discrepancies.
