  • The Parish-Smithsonian Expedition was an expedition sponsored by Lee Hamilton Parish and his parents, Samuel W. and Ella Parish. The goal of the expedition was to collect natural history specimens, mostly along the coastal region of Haiti. Smithsonian taxidermist Watson Perrygo was a member of the expedition and sailed to Haiti with the Parishes on their yacht, the "Esperanza." During the expedition, the "Esperanza" had to make an unplanned stop in Cuba after a storm wrecked her mast. Perrygo also collected bird specimens in Cuba while the yacht was being repaired. In Haiti, the expedition team collected birds and other natural history specimens and collected live reptiles for the National Zoological Park.
