Summary

Documentation of a gift to the United States National Museum (now known as the National Museum of Natural History) from Capt. John N. Belkin, 20th Malaria Survey Unit, APO 709. Capt. Belkin was a mosquito specialist in the Malaria Survey detachment of the U.S. Army Sanitary Corps in the Solomon Islands from 1943-45. These units helped identify how to keep troops from contracting malaria, which was a large problem during World War II. For over 20 months Belkin collected more than 20,000 adult mosquito specimens and even more larvae on Guadalcanal Island. Handwritten on the paper is: "70 adults 37 slides Guadalcanal."
