Summary

Smithsonian Secretary G. Wayne Clough announces that the Smithsonian will begin closing galleries in its museums on May 1, due to Congressional budget cuts that reduced the number of gallery attendants available to monitor exhibits. Some exhibits will also likely be canceled or postponed in 2014 and 2015. The Smithsonian had $41 million in across-the-board cuts imposed on its federal appropriation for 2013 by the U.S. Congress. Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo will remain open, but individual exhibit galleries will be closed when sufficient security officers are not available.
