Summary

  • Michael Mason is named Director of the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage (CFCH), effective April 29, 2013. Mason, who has served the Smithsonian for 20 years, has been Assistant Director for Exhibitions at the Natural History Museum, Acting Director of the Office of Exhibits Central, Chief of Exhibit Development and Project Management, and Exhibit Developer and Co-Curator on the African Voices Exhibit. Prior to his work at Natural History, Mason worked at the Anacostia Community Museum.
  • Mason holds a bachelor's degree in American Studies from the University of Oregon, and his master's and doctoral degrees in folklore from Indiana University.
  • Mason succeeds Dan Sheehy, who served as Director of CFCH since 2010. Sheehy will continue his work with the Smithsonian as CFCH's Director of Folkways Recordings.
