Dr. Harold P. Stern, director of the Freer Gallery of Art since 1971, dies, at the age of 54, after a long illness. Thomas Lawton is appointed acting director, and later, director. Stern came to the Gallery as a graduate student from the University of Michigan in 1949. He was appointed to the curatorial staff in 1950, and became Assistant Director in 1962. The Harold P. Stern Memorial Fund is established in his honor, to further interest in Japanese art.
