Summary

Samuel P. Langley becomes director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. He serves until his death in 1906. In 1907 Charles G. Abbot becomes director, followed by Loyal B. Aldrich in 1944, and Fred L. Whipple in 1955.
